LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team, got its 2007 season off to a successful start.
The Golden Eagles broke the game open with four second-half goals and blanked Saint Martin's University in the 2007 season opener for both schools. Cal State L.A. (5-0) got a pair of goals and one assist from
Khadijah Greenwood and a goal and an assist from
Erika Prado. The Golden Eagles enjoyed a hefty 26-0 advantage in shots and goalkeeper
Reyna Coca did not need to make a save to post the shutout.
Saint Martin's, which was playing its first ever NCAA Division II game, got a solid effort from goalkeeper Breanna Klasen, who made nine saves, including several dazzling stops of prime Cal State L.A. scoring opportunities.
The Golden Eagles grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when Prado scored on a rebound. Klasen made a diving save of a shot by Greenwood and Prado got to the loose ball and knocked it into the goal.
Even though the Golden Eagles had 13 first-half shots, they held just a 1-0 lead after the first 45 minutes. A goal by freshman Hana Kabain the 58th minute gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 edge. She knocked in a rebound of a shot by Prado to give Cal State L.A. a two-goal lead.
The Golden Eagles then erupted for three goals in a span of just seven minutes. Greenwood made it 3-0 with an assist from
Liz Franco. Greenwood got a pass from Franco in the box in the 81
st minute and shot it past Klasen. Greenwood then scored again in the 85
th minute to make it 4-0 with assist from Franco and
Ana Valverde.
Cal State L.A. rounded out the scoring in the 88
th minute when
Megan Stevenson scored off a pass from Valverde to make it 5-0.
Franco and Valverde ended up with two assists each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Wednesday, Aug. 29, with a home game against Cal State San Marcos.
